A massive wide-area disaster could bring most of what we in North America know as civilization to its knees. Access to cheap and reliable power, clean water in nearly unlimited amounts, and ease of long distance travel using relatively inexpensive motor fuels – all could disappear quickly for any number of reasons. Life would go on. Far less comfortable and certainly shorter, as modern medicine and other modern support faded away and so on. But the Earth is unlikely to be smashed by ancient alien space junk. Far more likely are storms, floods and other personal disasters, like a house fire, that will strike – affecting few, or entire communities.
